A Solid First TryMay 14, 2008 What took Apple several iterations to get right seems to have happened to Microsoft on the first time out. The device is a solid overall performer, with plenty of the standard media options we now expect from our portable music players, such as video playback and picture viewing. Where it truly shines, however, is in the inclusion of minor touches that help set it apart from the rest of the ever-more flooded sea of competitors. Being able to set a custom wallpaper, for example, is a minor feature that, oddly enough, I can not imagine myself having to give up. The ability to wirelessly sync with the computer or share music with other Zune owners are also small but wonderful features that have their moments of glory.
The interface, meanwhile, is what really drew me to the Zune. I never cared much for the iPod's clickwheel or the iPod's Touch's touch interface; such control methods feel frustratingly and needlessly imprecise when all I wish to do is listen to music and occasionally skip forward or back. The inclusion of tactile buttons, then, is what really makes me love this device. They feel responsive and solid, and the layout, while different, does work well from a usability perspective.
The screen is gorgeous and big, and provides ample room for video, pictures, and other visual media to be displayed. It has yet to be scratched, without me using a screen protector or case of any kind, which suggests that the screen is well made and solid.
However, the device does have its drawbacks. The software can be quirky and dysfunctional, and while I have yet to encounter too many problems with it, others haven't been as lucky. The battery life leaves something to be desired, with it being noticeably shorter than I'd otherwise care for it to be. It can also be very difficult to get video onto the Zune, as there are few free applications that will get video into a format the Zune software can convert to use for the Zune.
However, if you're looking for a relatively cheap, solid, and all-around good MP3 player, this may be what you're looking for. Despite its drawbacks, it remains a solid first entry into the MP3 player arena, and remains one of the better portable media players out there.
Zune PlayerMay 14, 2008 I love my Zune. The Zune Pass is a terrific way to get tons of new music, and after installing an auxiliary line in my car, I can essentially listen to all my music the entire day. And I only got a 30GB but with over 1800 pictures and 2800 songs, I still have over 17GB free!
GoodMay 14, 2008 This item is quite a pain in the.... however I have learn how to use and it works quite well Thanks
A good productMay 11, 2008 I got mine for Christmas, and I was very happy with it. The 27 or so GB capacity is more than I need. The sound quality is good, but the battery life could have been slightly better (especially after viewing long videos on it). I don't really understand the need for the Zune software- Microsoft made this part way more complicated than it needs to be. The interface of the Zune itself is easy to understand. The reception quality isn't great, but I don't listen to the radio much. Overall, quite a good product.
Quality ProductMay 10, 2008 The 30 GB Zune is a all around good product. Audio sounds good, video is clear. It is a little pricy, but is worth it in the long run.
